Robots have become a part of our lives, businesses and production lines. The restaurant industry began automation in order taking with kiosks and apps to record orders, but robotic kitchens linked with contactless POS appear to be the future. According to many business leaders and entrepreurs, businesses and customers will adapt to AI and robotics in the future, and the food-service Industry will be part of this trend.

Current labor and payroll issues in the food-service industry have incentivized automation of processes and robotics. Labor is a large cost for the food business, as it turnover. Robots solve both issues, and come with the ability to replicate the styles of famous chefs at a relatively low cost. Robots are working in the kitchen, taking orders and delivering food and proving that automation and robotics are the future of the food industry. The Great Resignation and the pandemic created a fertile breeding ground for contactless ordering and food delivery.

There are a number of companies working on restaurant robotic platforms. MIT created an automated restaurant called “Spyce”, and a fully automated McDonalds restaurant was built in Arizona. Miso is a robotic restaurant company that has been given $40 million in funding and works with Chipotle and Salad Works to create salad and chips. Like with office automation, the preparation of ingredients and basics in the kitchen can allow chefs and workers to focus on increasing food quality. Beyond the kitchen, food can be delivered by robots to customers, and Dominos has begun work and trials on automatic delivery robots. Blue Chip companies and major research institutions are stepping into the space and ready to implement change.

The human element is important in the food business, and top chef’s techniques will be analyzed and copied by robotic chefs. Imagine going to an automated restaurant in the future with the same quality as that of a famous chef, but produced in record time and at a reasonable price. As companies and investors seek to embrace automated restaurants, expect to see improvements in the bottom line and quality of the food produced.
