Graphene is a strong and durable material that has become more accessible in recent years.

Carbon has 4-bonds that makes it very versatile. Graphene is a lattice of carbon atoms that are double bonded together. It has many unique properties. Graphenea, a retailer of graphene products, has information about this compound, and graphene is the strongest material known to man at 100-300 times stronger than steel, the lightest material known, the best conductor of electricity and graphene has many more useful properties.

The traditional process of graphene production involves the use of toxic metals and volatile organic compounds to grow a layer of graphene for use. The name of this process is chemical vapor deposition, and during this process a gas is added into a vacuum where it plates onto metal. A layer of carbon found in a gas is passed over a metallic surface (usually copper or palladium) in a process and a single layer of graphene is removed for processing. This process produces hazardous waste and is extremely expensive. The gasses involved must be properly handled and disposed of.

In a recent development, researchers and scientists are growing graphene layers using carbon monoxide gas as the carbon source. Using carbon monoxide, scientists can produce graphene crystals outside of high-pressure environments. In addition, scientists from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have discovered a way to produce graphene from carbon dioxide. The metal surface used to produce graphene from both carbon dioxide and monoxide is copper and palladium. These processes may also be able to remove and sequester carbon in the air to a certain extent, making them a “green” technology.

Graphene is an amazing material that has application from body armor, electrical components, aerospace technology and more. It is still difficult to create, but new methods are creating opportunities for future growth.
