Just came across an interesting new paper, on sports supplements, which pretty much verifies past research.

Tldr, most sports supplements are garbage.

Let's start with what is imo the most mind blowing finding:

Twenty-three of 57 products (40%) did not contain a detectable amount of the labeled ingredient.

Lmao, what the fuck. You literally had one fucking job 馃ぃ馃槀

Six of 57 products (11%) contained a quantity of the ingredient within 10% of the labeled quantity.

Yeah still not good. So far, one in two products found to be junk when it comes to their main ingredient.

Seven of 57 products (12%) were found to contain at least 1 FDA-prohibited ingredient

Hahahaha. Yeah, that doesn't sound good.

1 product contained 4 different prohibited ingredients

Sounds like a great cancer supplement to me. 馃帀

Eighty-nine percent of dietary supplement labels did not accurately declare the ingredients found in the products, and 12% of products contained FDA-prohibited ingredients

At the end of the day, almost all lied on way or the other on their label.

But but but the FDA. But but regulations. Meh. This is directly from the FDA's mouth

Does FDA routinely analyze the content of dietary supplements?
No. FDA has limited resources to analyze the composition of food products, including dietary supplements, and, therefore, focuses its resources first on public health emergencies and products that may have caused injury or illness. FDA does not test dietary supplements before they are sold to consumers. Consumers may contact the dietary supplement manufacturer or a commercial laboratory for an analysis of a product鈥檚 content. source

To be fair, there's so much junk out there it is impossible for any health agency to keep an eye on everything.

Here's the full paper in case you fancy a read

So yeah, something to keep in mind if you use supplements in your diet, even if they are "100 % natural" or whatever.

As I aforementioned, this is just one of the many papers showcasing the supplement bussiness is largely junk and sketchy as fuck. Even the most innocent stuff like vitamins and protein powders have often be found to be contaminated with toxic elements, heavy metals and shit like that.

Not even prenatal vitamins where you would expect some extra caution seem to be safe. 馃樁

Ideally you want to just eat clean and avoid that shit or do some research before showing your trust to a specific brand. And definitely stay away from crap that is only available online!
