This beautiful red, café bus is situated at Old Petrie Town, north Brisbane, Australia. Old Petrie Town is a restored historic village replicating life pre1930's. In 1978, a local landscape architect was requested by the Pine Rivers Shire Council to submit ideas for development of the former Hyde Property in Dayboro Road, west of Petrie. The council also requested that a reserve be made available to accommodate historical buildings around this homestead. It was given the name, North Pine Country Park but in 2000 it was renamed, ‘Old Petrie Town.’
It is now well known for its colourful country markets and relaxed ambience, and these markets are open for business every Sunday. Stalls laden with craft, handmade goods, jewellery, pottery, clothing, fruit and vegetables entice many on a regular basis. This red, double decker café bus is a popular pace to rest, quench your thirst, satisfy your hunger and recharge the batteries in between shopping and browsing.
Old Petrie Town is set in over 50 acres of manicured gardens and bushland, and the property is listed as a koala reserve. 300 year old fig trees stand silently around the grounds as a testament to their strength and longevity. They fit in well with the inclusion of the four museums placed around the property and they include a Fire and Scouts museum a Historical museum and a museum featuring Old Steam Engines. The Pine Rivers Shire Museum provides information into the days of the early settlers and people can enjoy viewing many fascinating remnants from the local World War II Army Camp.
Old buildings placed around the village date back as far as the late 1880’s and early 1990’s. They include the Town Common, Hyde Homestead, the Fireman’s Cottage, McKenzie’s Store, the National Bank, St Thomas Church, the Courthouse, the School Play Shed, the Bakehouse and Coe’s Cottage. Each building has its own, individual story and most of them are in use today.
The Pine Rivers Heritage Museum has a wonderful range of items and exhibitions on display. It traces the history of the region from 1840. Amongst the stalls of modern and old fashioned wares are historical shops which including a wood-fired bakery, and a lolly shop.
Catering to a variety of tastes, hawkers sell everything from German sausages, Thai Curry puffs, Belgian Waffles, Aussie Damper, Dutch Pancakes, Homemade Lemonade and Ice creams from the comfort of a central barn.
