Beautiful Primroses.

Primrose (Primula vulgaris) is a species of flowering plant which is part of the family Primulaceae and are native to western and southern Europe, northwest Africa, and parts of southwest Asia.

Primroses are known also as common primrose or English primrose which distinguishes it from other Primula species which are also called Primroses. The scientific name is derived from the Latin word ‘primus’ meaning ‘prime,’ which emphasizes the fact that these flowers are one of the first to bloom in Spring. Other meanings include ‘rosa’ which indicates first, feminine and rose. The term Vulagris refers to ‘common’ or ‘widespread.’

The range of Primrose species and hybrids is extensive and they include the Japanese Primroses which are red, white or purple, the hardy, fragrant Cowslip Primrose which are yellow, and the English Primrose which are heavy bloomers with 2-3 flowers per stalk.

Then there are the Polyanthus Primroses which are often confused with the English Primroses. Generally speaking, they are all hybrids of different varieties and they produce big clusters of flowers at the tip of one foot stems.

The Polyanthus Primrose comes in a variety of colours and make great indoor plants. They create a beautiful display in a bulb garden and have the ability to bloom again in autumn if they are pruned to half their normal size directly after the spring season.

Chinese Primroses are rather tender and do best when in pots indoors. They are characterized by their star shaped flowers which are white, pink, lavender or coral in colour and grow in clusters on 8 inch stalks.

Julianna Primroses are a group of hybrids and are amongst the earliest to bloom. They grow low to the ground and can produce either clustered or single flowers. Moonlight Primroses don’t flower until summer. Their flowers are fragrant, and bell shaped and grow on 18 inch stems. They are usually yellow in colour but white and purple varieties are also available.

Fairy Primroses are characterized by their small leaves, long stalks and many foot tall stalks of flowers. The German Primrose are large 12 inch tall plants and their leaves are 10 inches and round in shape. These primroses are usually red in colour.

Best tips for growing Primroses for indoors is to provide cool night time temperatures of around 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit. They prefer filtered sun and moist soil and their daytime temperatures need to stay below 80 degrees.

Once they have finished blooming inside, it is a good idea to plant them in the garden or alternatively, place them in their pots outdoors and bring them back indoors again at the end of the season. They thrive outdoors in cool temperatures with rich humus soil and plenty of compost with leaf mold added. They also prefer full sun in spring but require part shade during the warm summer months.
