Beautiful Macaws.
Macaws are such entertaining birds and I love interacting with them whenever possible. These beautiful and very friendly ones reside at the Ecopark Fishing World in Beenleigh, Queensland, Australia
I had the privilege of watching them retrieve seeds from my husband behind a wire fence and was amazed at just how gentle they are when taking one or more seeds from his open palm.
Macaws are perhaps the most easily recognizable birds in the parrot family and have been kept as pets for hundreds of years due, largely to their loyal nature.
Each one has their own individual characteristics and they absolutely love human interaction, however, their size can produce challenges when caring for them and I think if they are going to be kept as pets, they need a very large area to fly around in.
So, as much as I love getting up close to them, I would much prefer them to live freely in their natural environment.
There are over 370 different types of parrots on Earth, and they weigh between 2 and 4 pounds. The Hyacinth Macaw is the largest of the Macaws.
They can reach nearly 3 and a half feet long from the beak to the tip of the tail. Not only that; their impressive wingspan reaches up to 60 inches.
Mini Macaws are the smaller variety and they grow to lengths of 12 inches, which is about the size of a medium sized conure or large parakeet.
All Macaw's share common attributes, such as the bare rings of skin around their eyes although the Hyacinth does not have this feature.
When properly taken care of, some macaw species, such as Blue and Gold Macaws can live for an average of 60 years, and many have been recorded to live for up to 80 years or even more.
Some even end up outliving their owners.
Other hybrid macaws include the Catalina Macaw, the Harlequin Macaw, and the Camelot Macaw.
Hyacinth Macaws have incredibly strong beaks, capable of cracking open the shell of coconuts.
Macaws scaly tongues actually have a bone in them which enables these birds to tap into fruit and nuts.
THANK YOU FOR VIEWING. HAVE A GREAT DAY.
