METROSIDEROS: (NEW ZEALAND CHRISTMAS TREE)
This dense shrub with the spiky red flowers is a genus from the Myrtaceae family. It is extremely common throughout the Pacific region and its best known species is the New Zealand Pohutukawa, otherwise called The Christmas Tree.
There are approximately 60 species and is characterized by their bright red, fluffy flowers and their silver/lime coloured leaves.
It is idea for hedging, windbreaks and for providing privacy where needed and thrives in coastal areas, surviving well in windy, exposed sites.
The seeds are particularly hardy and can resist freezing temperatures. It has been reported that the seed can germinate after being submerged in salt water for up to 30 days
It is also a great plant refuge for birds who love eating the nectar from the flowers, and therefore I just had to add this capture of a rainbow lorikeet feeding on nectar from the Metrosideros flower.
And here is my #alwaysadigital version of the beautiful Metrosideros Flower.
THANK YOU FOR VEWING. HAVE A GREAT DAY.
