Originally released in May 1992, Wolfenstein 3D was a title that caught a lot of attention. Whether it was the subject matter, killing Nazi’s, or it was the game engine – not many 3D first-person shooters (FPS) titles at the time, is unclear. I remember Wolfenstein 3D being featured in some gaming publications of the time and then my short time with it on 3DO years later. I simply did not have a computer to play it, so I waited for it to be released on consoles. It seems the Sega Master System is the next console to receive a port. Unofficially, of course.
The original Wolfenstein 3D was not full-on 3D, neither is this demake for the Sega Master System. It is interesting to see the game running, admittedly barebones, on the Sega Master System (SMS).
What is here is clearly shaping up to be Wolfenstein 3D. The limitations of the hardware are rearing their ugly head though. Currently, Wolfenstein 3D is limited to one sprite on screen at a time.
Also, guards will not shoot unless they are visible to the player. This keeps the game “fairer” and no phantom deaths because you could not see the enemy.
What is shown in the video above is impressive. Wolfenstein 3D for the SMS is still a work in progress with plenty left to do. Check out the SMSPower forums for a very detailed walk through the challenges faced with this port.
I personally love these demakes. The original title is still very much alive in the port while there are obvious limitations at play.
Right now, the SMS port looks worse than Doom on Super Nintendo but not by much. The technical accomplishments on display, the closeness to the original, is phenomenally impressive.
