An independent homebrew developer is currently porting Starfox over to the Sega Genesis console. Yep, you read that right, Starfox is being ported. What is wild here is, just how impressive this demo is already. This has been a long time in development, this is just the latest footage of a more recent build.
Genesis does what Nintendon’t
Why Nintendo never countered with “Nintendo is what Genesisn’t” I will never understand. Okay, back to the Genesis port of Starfox.
We can discuss the Genesis having a faster processor than the Super Nintendo, or SNES having more colors, etc. What matters is the games. Starfox on Super Nintendo was only possible thanks to the SuperFX chip.
What you are seeing in the embedded video is a fan port of Starfox on the stock Sega Genesis. This was created using third party development tools to boot.
Just imagine what could have been done with official dev kits.
Likelihood of seeing a final release
Unfortunately, there is no ROM file download available. This is potentially bad news as Nintendo could drop a Cease and Desist at any moment (which they are known to do).
According to their Twitter post there will be a ROM download made available at a later date. It is pointed out that this will happen when there is collision added.
I understand that stance, right now it is probably not much of a game if you can fly through everything.
Still, that looming threat of a C&D by Nintendo has me concerned that we will never see a ROM download made available.
What do you think of this Starfox to Sega Genesis port? Intrigued? Is this “against the rules”?
For me, I think it is quite cool. We have a game we can compare between the SNES and Genesis, even if slightly unfairly considering this is an unofficial port.
