Star Fox Receives New Control Method Update

Okay, this is one of those control methods that came to be popular years after the release of Star Fox. It is great to see fans implementing it though. My question is, why did no one think of this sooner? It is such a simple change that, now, seems so obvious. It is here now and that is what matters. This patch did not just bring one change though, there are many.

Setting up for a successful run

You will need Star Fox v1.2 so please pay attention to which ROM you have. Next, make sure to have an official mouse plugged into controller port 2. Have a comfortable surface to use the mouse on.

Other than that, you need a way to play this on your Super Nintendo – flash cart that supports the other upgrades included.

How the mouse is integrated

Pretty simple really. Moving the mouse around causes your ship to move in that direction. Much like using the controller. Controls are modified as such –

Left mouse button – Fire
Right mouse button – Bomb
Both buttons – Boost or Brake. Double clicking both buttons swap mode

Interestingly, you can still control the ship’s movement with the first controller. I guess if you want to experience Star Fox as a two-player game, one can control movement, the other everything else.

Good luck if you try that though. All I see is trouble coming from it.

Other upgrades included

As seems normal for these Star Fox hacks, the speed fixes are included. That means 21 mhz SuperFX mode and FASTROM are enabled.

Why not too? If you can play with better speed, why wouldn’t you?
