Spax 2D Side Scrolling Action Game in Development for Sega Genesis
Spax is a new 2D side scrolling action game. There is not a lot available on this one yet, other than what you will see in the video below. Taking control of a dragon type creature, you must traverse the game world and avoid the enemies that inhabit the game world. Standard 2D action gaming fare.
A forgotten genre
The 2D side scrolling action genre used to rule the roost so to speak. Games such as Mega Man, Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario, and Bonk were synonymous with the genre.
Those days are long gone now. While in some areas the genre still thrives – the newer Wonder Boy games, Castlevania style games on PC, etc remind us regularly. For me, this genre is the epitome of my childhood. I loved playing these games, I was assuredly addicted to it.
Then 3D and the original PlayStation happened. Things changed.
Spaz is stacking up to be a contender
After playing the demo, I can say, there are a few rough edges with Spax. The animation for his jump seems a little off. Speed could be an issue for many gamers, he just appears slow.
There is a small pause before a jump and then when you land. This just feels “off” as in breaking the flow of the game a bit. It is hard to put my finger on but something about that pause takes me out of the action.
The hit box is a little hard to gauge as well. There is a plant creature that causes damage in the level. Knowing where to jump to avoid damage is harder than it should be in my opinion.
Same for some “hail mary” jumps. Understanding where you can stand and not fall off the ledge is rough. The other side is just far enough out that if you don’t take every pixel worth of ledge to leap from, you will die.
All in all, what is here for Spax is interesting and is a great start. I hope the developer continues.
