Fans continue to take classic franchises to new frontiers. Sonic recreated in Minecraft is one such endeavor. What is interesting here is, this is not just a skin featuring blue and red colors. This is literally a 2.5D side scrolling action game that looks amazingly similar to the 16-Bit Sega Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog games. The map is available for download too!
Sega have something few companies have ever achieved. An undying fanbase for one of their characters. The problem is, Sega seems to be rather untrustworthy in managing that fame. Game quality is hit or miss, with misses being rather huge in the market.
Fans have taken Sonic in new directions, some that Sega probably never thought of. I can say, I have yet to see a digital comic or point and click adventure (or turn based RPG) starring Sonic. Never mind, it seems fans are keeping Sonic where they like him most – 2D and 2.5D games (hint, hint, Sega).
To me, Minecraft is block busting and building. I have seen developers make facsimiles of classic games, then others recreate whole computers and consoles. I am in awe of it all, truthfully.
The embedded video above is quite interesting for a couple reasons. One, it is done with stock Minecraft – vanilla. No mods. There is use of a secondary program to create the necessary pieces to bring Sonic in Minecraft to life, though vanilla Minecraft accepts those pieces no problem.
To some, this is not completely vanilla Minecraft, for me, it is close enough. It is impressive as all get out and simply amazing what they created here.
