You are not alone if you had to read that headline more than once. I did too, and I am the one that wrote it. Thanks to the hard work by RetroGL over on YouTube, we are seeing this port happen. Earlier this year SNK vs Capcom entered the Alpha stage, only thing left is finishing up and dropping a release candidate.
While this 8-Bit computer port cannot compare to modern hardware on many fronts, it can on the most important ones – gameplay, fun factor, atmosphere, etc. From what I see here with SNK vs Capcom is something that could be a blast to play with a friend.
RetroGL has plans to use this engine for future projects, good idea I am sure this represents too much work to toss away after one release. Also, at the beginning of the video below, you will see a notice detailing more plans. Updates to the AI, music for some characters, and even news of what to expect in the Commodore 128 version are mentioned.
This update brings more finesse to the fighting. Combo breakers, reversals, and more are now implemented. Also, there is a full story for each fighter. This really comes across as a quality release.
I want to finish this by mentioning the details in the characters and stages. Shading is used a lot in the backgrounds, color changes too for environmental effects like lightning.
It all comes together to make an interesting release. I do hope RetoGL is able to finish this before Capcom, if they were so inclined, drop a cease and desist letter.
To see this running on a Commodore 64 is quite amazing. We are talking about a computer that came out in early 1982 and realistically has no hardware updates available.
What other games do you want to see ported to the Commodore 64? I would love to see a 2D Spyro the Dragon on the C64 myself.
