Want to play Darkstalkers on your Sega Genesis? It may be a reality sooner than later. It may not be widely known but, Darkstalkers was planned for release on the Sega 32X console before being moved to the Sony PlayStation. With a bit of work, it could work on the Sega Genesis, as evidenced by this tech demo.
Originally, Darkstalkers was released in 1994 in arcades, coming home to the Sony PlayStation, the sequel Darkstalkers Revenge would hit arcades and Sega Saturn.
The story for Darkstalkers revolves around our realm merging with another where creatures exist. Like Mortal Kombat’s story, still cool though. Whatever gives us reason to fight creatures like those featured in Darkstalkers is fine with me.
This tech demo of Darkstalkers features Victor von Gerdenheim, based on Frankenstein’s monster, and Felicia, a feline style character.
Moves are not implemented, well most of them anyhow. It seems the idea with this release is simply to show it is possible on the hardware. This and the recent Final Fight update prove the Sega Genesis still has plenty of power under the hood.
Right now, you can move Victor or Filicia around the screen, do some basic things like jump, and perform an attack or two. That is about it. There is only one background available that is one screen so no idea on what scrolling will be implemented.
Animation is key with this franchise. Look at Victor when he kicks. Just like the arcade and other home ports, his muscles contort and bulge in a realistic manner. Smoothly as well.
What game would you like to see on the Sega Genesis? I am interested in seeing what someone could do with Crash Bandicoot or Spyro the Dragon in a 16-bit style like this myself. Let me know in the comments below.
