It is basically a mini computer that runs on next to no power making it ideal for projects like this. Bang for the buck they are interesting to have (but often sell out whenever boards are made available). Actually getting one is sometimes tough (well, at a decent price).
There are many emulators to let you make the Pi act like different computers and consoles. The "fun" of Raspberry Pi is "what can we stick it in today?"
