The Atari 2600 console, AKA Atari VCS, originally released in September 1977, was recently commemorated in Lego form. You read that right, the interlocking bricks company has made an Atari 2600 console using their popular product. Sadly, no, it is not a working Atari 2600, and they missed a great marketing opportunity on top of that.
First up, obviously this is not a working Atari 2600. Honestly, I say give it a few months before we see someone hack a working 2600 into this build. Next, that title.
According to Gamespot, this set comes in at 2,532 pieces, Lego missed a great marketing gimmick. Considering the name of the console is Atari ‘2600’, you would think they could have fit another 68 pieces into the box somehow. That way, the piece count would be 2,600 pieces.
I know, nerd logic here. Anyhow, onto the more fun stuff.
The Lego Atari 2600 is quite impressive looking. I mean, seriously. They even included some extra elements for fans. This is not just a Lego Atari 2600 build (that is $240 by the way – Lego likes 10 cents per piece on their sets).
One neat addition is a living room scene built into the console. There are posters on the wall, a television, stereo, and even a cat. How cool is that?
The set looks just like an Atari 2600 though, quite impressive. Down to the switches to additional cartridges (Centipede, Asteroids, and Adventure). There is even a cartridge cabinet to put the carts.
On top of that coolness, there are also stand-alone scenes from those three games. Quite cool they did this. Makes me want to whip out the 400 pounds of Lego’s I have purchased over the years and recreate some of these.
I would, except so many pieces are exclusive to this set. This could be a boon for resellers looking for an investment. Just look at some retired Lego sets on eBay for proof.
