I am sure I am not the only one that saw Super Mario Maker and thought, man, that would rock on the GBA. Sadly, Nintendo didn’t think so, only releasing on the 3DS and Nintendo Switch. That is not stopping a fan from making a port for the Game Boy Advance themselves. Even cooler, they started dropping major updates expanding it beyond what Nintendo did.
Fans Do What Nintendon’t
I figure Sega wouldn’t mind my borrowing their advertising play on words there. Seriously, over on Youtube, Game of Tobi is working on Super Mario Maker for the Game Boy Advance (GBA). So far, they have shown off some major progress with this fan port.
In the various videos they have posted they show off building levels, testing them, adjusting them, etc. It is simply amazing seeing this in action.
As of this writing, there is no demo or anything, so we are still well within the shadow of the House Mario Built dropping a Cease and Desist on this and ending it.
Even Cooler, Updates!
The latest updates include various graphics changes, fans asked for things like classic pipes in the game. Done. What fans did not know was coming is, Super Mario 63 graphics.
Basically, a style that has some familiar details to the world of Super Mario 64 and even Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island on the Super Nintendo.
In the video embedded above, we see Game of Tobi swapping around the graphics modes on the fly. Similar to retro titles that got HD remakes that allowed swapping HD to retro graphics on the fly. Nice touch.
One last surprise shown in the video comes at the end. I won’t spoil it here, please watch the video above all the way through. Leave them a like, a comment, a share, it all helps creators living their dreams know they are appreciated and seen.
It would be even cooler if we could mix and match things from the various graphics styles available. Classic pipes but newer piranha plants for instance.
For now, we will have to admire from afar though. Hopefully a public release is made before Nintendo shuts this down. I am sure, when they get word of this, if they don’t already know, their lawyers will be alerted. It is their legal right to protect their Ips, I just hope they are slow on this one.
