Doom is Doom. Fans are definitely proving that old saying, “if there is a screen, it can play Doom.” What about if there is no screen? At least a screen in the traditional sense? That brings us to this marvel of engineering, Doom running on a volumetric display. There is no tangible screen, but it is playing Doom. Just get the Tylenol ready if you want to spend much time traversing your way to Hell.
Volumetric displays are a kind of 3D display method, providing each eye a slightly different view. This creates the 3D effect we see including depth. Unlike Virtual Reality display methods, multiple people can view a volumetric display, and each will have an accurate viewpoint.
The technology is not perfect, as you can see from the embedded video, it is somewhat hard to make out what you are seeing. There is enough there to tell this is Doom and the sounds are spot on.
According to the video description, this would run smoother if the dome was installed. That might reduce the flicker but I don’t think it will improve the overall graphical appearance.
While I can see this being an amazing way to play Doom, I understand it would come at a great price.
Headaches and eye strain.
This is being played in 3rd person as well, not the normal viewpoint of a Doom game. This is probably to make it easier to show off the volumetric display and its capabilities.
Have some medicine available if you plan on watching this video too many times over, it is rather short (less than 30 seconds).
What is on display though is impressive and has me wanting to see more.
Where is the wildest place you have seen Doom running? Let me know in the comments.
