Cruella de Vil was first introduced to fans in the 1956 novel by Dodie Smith titled The Hundred and One Dalmations. In 1961 Disney released the first animated feature based on that book, One Hundred and One Dalmations. Now, on May 28th, 2021, fans of the breed of dog’s antics will be able to catch Cruella. What is interesting here is how much of de Vil’s backstory we are set to see in the film. Something the previous media only hinted at.
The people behind Cruella
Craig Gillespie is handling the directing duties for Cruella. Gillespie previously worked on Fright Night (2011), I, Tonya (2017) United States of Tara (2009 to 2010) and other movies and television shows. Emma Stone takes up the role of Estella “Cruella” de Vil, a woman that has an affinity for fur, to say the least about her character. Then we have Emma Thompson playing the Baroness, head of the upscale fashion house that hires Estella.
Why fans will want to watch
Honestly, this is the first time we are going to get to see this much of Cruella’s past. We are going to get to see her motivation to become the evil character we know from other movies. This is something like Joker but for Disney. Cruella is one of the darker villains in Disney history – she literally wants to kill puppies for a fur coat. At least other villains go for people, not animals, as their targets. Not Cruella, no, she must go for defenseless puppies. Cuddly puppies. If you ever wanted to know more about what made Cruella tick, then this is the movie for you. If you are a fan of the One Hundred and One Dalmations series, then you may be lacking in content here. Mainly because this movie is not focused on the dog’s adventures.
Cruella will launch on May 28th, 2021.
