Originally released in 1989, the Atari Lynx was a hybrid 8 and 16-bit handheld gaming device. Another feat this portable accomplished was being the first such device with a color screen.
Unfortunately, as we all know, being first is not always proven to be the winner. The Atari Lynx was developed by Epyx but farmed out for marketing. Atari picked it up with the understanding that Epyx would handle game development.
Unfortunately, by the end of the year, Atari owned the whole project and were forced to scramble to get new software developed. Notable features of the Atari Lynx include the color screen as well as hardware scaling of sprites (something Nintendo popularized with their SNES).
