There’s an empty picture frame on my dresser that I have not filled with a picture.
I consider myself quite the photographer,
A whiz with a camera,
I can capture a hummingbird’s wing in first flight,
And yet, try as I might,
I can’t think of the picture that would capture the missing pieces of my life.

If my life were art, then it would be created with mixed media-
A pencil to outline the odd assortment of agony and euphoria,
Acrylics to capture the unbridled laughter,
Watercolor painted in gentle strokes to evoke the trauma, the pain that comes
From screaming until your lungs are on fire.

There’s an empty picture frame on my dresser
That I have devoted to my father.
All my life he’s played Houdini,
And doting daughter, I played peekaboo dutifully,
Until he changed the rules of the game suddenly-
He hid, I sought,
I screamed, I fought.
I cursed, I cried,
I almost died.
But nothing...
No memory buffer,
No camera shutter,
Not even the lowest aperture f-number on my camera could capture my father where he’s gone.

And so, my picture frame stands on my dresser,
And to the naked eye, I agree, it's empty.
But just between you and me,
There's a little secret you can't see.
The picture frame holds my Daddy.

Hi guys,

I hope you're having or had a great Easter.

I'm catching up on the Weekend 5-minute Freewrite hosted by mariannewest@mariannewest in the Freewriters Community.

For the Weekend Freewrite, one is invited to use one or all of the prompts posted during the week in a single piece.

Prompts

  • picture frame
  • energy production
  • move your money
  • bliss
  • armor
  • blue zone

I chose picture frame. This one was a bit vulnerable for me, but I allowed myself to feel, gave into the emotions, and I tried my best.

There's still time for you guys to try. Here's the link. Please check it out.
