Hey folks, we touched a bit on the LAN in the previous post on how networks come together . We also mentioned LAN switches however we did not deep dive into how they work and the functionality of these switches so let's take a bit of a dive into this piece of tech.
In my personal opinion, I feel that switches are very under valued in our environment because they get setup initially and they are often forgotten about because they are just one of those things that just works until it dies. People or business decision makers never really put together the importance of switches nor understand that without good switches you would never be able to communicate to servers and deliver services either to clients or end users.
Switches are categorized by access switches and a core switch, the access switches basically delivers connectivity to end users whilst core switches are responsible for the routing of communications to servers and to communicate with other end users.
So we consider this the foundation off all networks with levels that can be built on to make networks better.
We will take a deeper dive into the functionality and services of the switch in future posts to help understand this better.
