A file server is a role on a given server that is responsible for being the central repository for files and data that other users/computers can access.
The file server allows users to share information on a domain , the pros of this is that you can share documents without physically passing data on which is easier and less of a data risk.
IT administrators also have the ability to lock down permissions based on user rights which is also another added benefit so we do not have users viewing sensitive data.
Another good reason for having a central file repository is the option of having this backed up so in the event of data loss that users have peace of mind that their information is safe.
