So I saw Wednesday season 2 some months back and I want to review it, as this season wasn't a cakewalk. Season one was all about Nevermore Academy, so season two was like, okay let's take that one and make it ten times darker and dirtier, and 1I liked every minute of it, it was spot on.
So the story sets on Nevermore Academy, and Wednesdaly Addams, but this time she returns as this reluctant campus celebrity, who has the burden of all that has transpired in season one. This season two, Wednesday's journey is far from peaceful, though, as she faces new challenges and old enemies in the realm of family, friends, new mysteries and a world she must hold up to try to keep alive. What really hooked me was that Wednesday is trying to master her emerging psychic ability while also thwarting a killing spree and solving the mystery tied to her parents from 25 years ago, It's a lot to fit in, but the series manages to do so without being overwhelming.
Needless to say the very first episode of the series, Wednesday, has a terrifying vision in which her roommate Enid dies and the blame falls on her, so she promises to do anything to save Enid or die trying, that alone was enough to get me interested because it's changing the tone of Wednesday's detached, unpretentious vibe and making it more desperate and personal, in this season, she was more than just sarcastic and dry humored, she was genuinely concerned about people's lives and helped to save them.
What I enjoyed the most is the fact that there was an introduction to the Addams family this time around, which got them entangled more in the story, the season looks to be kicking off with some of the whole Addams family, with Wednesday's addition coming in spookier and ookier than ever, that the family drama wasn't limited to just Wednesday's segment made the show more interesting, more substantial, like Nevermore Academy itself was a larger and more dangerous world this time.
The mystery elements were very interesting as well, There was always something that made me want to watch the next episode of the psychiatric hospital story, the ever changing friendships in school, secret societies and weird visions just popping up all throughout the season, I enjoyed that the show wasn't just about the shock value, it intentionally developed its mysteries and let the tension build as it saw fit rather than adding random gimmicks.
Now, the two part release, honestly, tested my patience a little, getting four episodes, then having to wait almost a month for the rest, made pacing feel a bit stretched out, especially with such a big cliffhanger closing out the first half, I remember finishing part one and just sitting there needing answers immediately, so the wait definitely added some frustration into the mix, and I think a lot of fans probably felt the same way waiting through that gap.
But Jenna Ortega remains the mainstay of this whole series, This season she got a lot more range than she did before in her delivery and when Enid's safety is at stake, it's deadpan emotive. Her ability to strike a balance between comedy and stakes, it's amazing, like she doesn't even have to think about keeping them both, they just come naturally to her, and neither one of them feels forced.
The other casts too also played a big role this time, this season, as Wednesday's sharp and dry wit had someone to bounce off of, The tension between old adversaries and new alliances kept things unpredictable, and I found myself second guessing who to trust right alongside Wednesday herself.
At the end, the mysteries were tied up in a manner that seemed to be well-earned, and the questions were answered enough to leave a little mystery still in the air to make Wednesday's return for the next season worthwhile, and knowing Wednesday is confirmed to come back, this time reportedly heading somewhere entirely new, only made the ending hit that much better, because it feels like this world still has so much more story left to tell.
I will say that if you enjoyed season 1 and would have wanted to see more depth and more family dynamics and higher stakes, then I would say you should absolutely watch Wednesday 2.
