Wars, insecurity, hunger, corruption, climate wahala, everybody chasing to live and here we are asking the question if it’s good to involve children in all this, I used to ponder that question all the time, until I realized it was the wrong question.
If we wait for the world to be perfect so that we can have kids, we will be waiting forever, because the world never is, and never will, because if we are honest with ourselves, every generation before us thought their own time was the worst, our grandparents had wars too, they had famine, they had colonial wahala and diseases with no cure, and they still had children plenty of them sef, life has never been a smooth, safe, guaranteed thing, If the question is whether or not people should have kids in this confused world, then the answer is yes, they should have kids, don't just come to life and sit, no, don't just quietly die, if there are no kids, how will the world move?
I believe having children isn't the problem, It is actually natural, it is actually the point go forth and multiply, that's not just a religious instruction, it is wired into us as living things , nobody should feel guilty for wanting their own mini-me running around, calling them mummy or daddy, carrying their nose or their laugh into the next generation, that desire is not selfish, that is human.
Now when things gets wicked is where it becomes a problem, to me, it should become a question of ethics not should you have kids, but can you take care of the ones you're bringing to the world?
A child does not sign a consent form saying that he/she wants to struggle, that he/she wants to be hungry, that he/she wants to sleep four in one bed, that he/she wishes to drop out of school in JSS2 because there's no money again, You made a choice, and that child is living the consequence of your choice, If, when you look at your income, your resources, your support system, the number of helping hands as we say here, and you can honestly say I can provide this child with food, shelter, clothing and a shot at something better, then you do it, you have got to have your kids, as many as you can get your heart and your pocket to give.
But if you already know that things are difficult, if you already know you have so many little ones and that they are hard to feed and you continue to add more of them ,because God will provide, or children are blessings sorry, but this isn't faith, it is carelessness in the guise of faith, God gave us brains too, God gave us family planning, he gave us wisdom, He gave us the sense to know when enough is enough, to use his name to excuse irresponsibility is not being spiritual, it is actually using it as a get out of jail free card from being accountable.
So I don't think the state of the world is a reason to not have children, I think that's a reason to be more thoughtful, to be more deliberate, to think, is this my job as a parent, am I going to be able to do this, before I bring a child into a world that is asking too much of everybody.
Bring your children, but don't bring your children to suffer.
