"In her shoes" is a story is built around Rose and Maggie, two sisters who are basically opposites of each other, Rose is the responsible one, a hardworking lawyer, the type of woman who has her career sorted but her personal life scattered all over the place and Maggie, is just the definition of chaos, irresponsible, unbothered, living off everyone else's goodwill while doing absolutely nothing to earn it, And when I tell you these two sisters cannot see eye to eye, I mean it in the way only siblings who grew up sharing a room can truly understand.
Now, everything comes crashing down when Maggie does the one thing you never do to your own sister, she sleeps with the man Rose was hoping would finally be her man, and watching that scene again, I still felt that same reaction I had the first time, I wasnt shock persay because to be honest movies do love this particular betrayal, but disbelief at how casually Maggie carries herself afterward, like she didn't just detonate a bomb in her sister's life, Rose, understandably, cuts her off completely, she throws her out of the house, and at this particular point, I was fully rooting for Rose, no hesitation, same as before.
But here's where the movie still gets me every time, so instead of just leaving Maggie to suffer the consequences of her own foolishness, the story sends her somewhere unexpected straight into the life of a grandmother neither of them even knew existed, Ella, this woman living her quiet life in a Florida retirement community, suddenly finds this granddaughter she never met showing up at her door with nowhere else to go, and honestly, this is where the movie stops being just a story about betrayal and becomes something deeper.....
a story about what happens when you are forced to face yourself with no one left to blame.
So watching Maggie slowly grow while living with Ella genuinely touched me, even on this rewatch,there's something about seeing someone finally sit still with their own mess, instead of running from it, that sure hits different every single time, she is not magically transformed into a perfect person, but you see that shift happening in little by little in a believable ways, Meanwhile, Rose is dealing with her own reckoning back home, realizing that being the "responsible one" doesn't automatically mean you have your life figured out either, that just sometimes the sister who looks like she's winning is quietly falling apart in her own way too.
So yess, what I appreciated most, is that the movie isn't rushed, the sisters don't go back into forgiving each other just because the runtime demands it, It takes its time letting both of them sit in their own growth separately before even attempting to bring them back together, and when family secrets eventually come out because of course there are family secrets, what is a drama without them everything clicks into place in a way that still feels earned rather than convenient, even knowing what's coming.
If I'm being honest, the film does run a little long, and there were stretches in the middle where I found myself checking how much time was left, rewatch or not, some of the emotional beats also lean heavily into sentimentality, the kind that borders on excessive if you are not fully in the mood for a good cry, but even with that, the performances carried it, Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette played off each other so well, you could feel the years of sibling tension without needing a single flashback to explain it.
By the end, I wasnt just satisfied, I was genuinely moved all over again, this is one of those movies that reminds you family is not always neat or fair, but it is rarely ever done with you either, Sisters fight, sisters betray, sisters disappear from each others lives for a while but somehow, when the truth finally surfaces, there is still a way back to each other.
