Which fads did you embrace growing up?
My answer:
These were days of simpler life with no social media but majorly spending time playing outdoors, table games, hanging out with family and friends and having lots of fun.
These were days when we males were only allowed to wear denim pants, not these ripped and distressed types that guys wear these days (You really would be mad to wear that in our home), but real denims with T-shirts or Polo and converse sneakers. Then the girls would not dare wear any dress that would expose their thighs or cleavages. We just had to dress decently.
In my childhood, I was not allowed to follow fads except of course they were very decent. My parents frowned on some kinds of dressing and If you were okay with being given four straight hours of moral sermons, then try bringing up the issue of wanting something not aligned with their Christian beliefs and values.
When I was a little boy (here we go, does this sound like your dad or mom? If so, good!),
"Don't you know that the way you dress is the way you will be addressed? A decently dressed guy portrays outstanding Class and pedigree ."
Society as we have it today, didn't just metamorphose into this very liberal, "do as you like" state, society was bound by rules and moral consciousness back then. For this reason, I found it utterly despicable when Boys sagged their trousers especially when the boxers underneath were popping. It was the fad then.
It was also the fad for boys to weave their hair and add coloured beads like those of the little kindergarten girls.
This came with, "only-girls-make-their-hair-like-this and it-is-not-a part-of-our-culture kind of sermon!" So as a boy, I wasn't allowed to weave my hair even if I would have very much loved to.
Like I said the only fad allowed were the Denim pants and the other variety of denim accessories like cowboy hats and jackets which remains a staple in my wardrobe.
Worn with converse sneakers known for their distinctive design and comfort.
Polo T-shirts would complete the outfit. I see this dress sense as the spirit of youth and effortless style still influencing trends today.
I loved jerseys as well, it remains timeless and it didn't matter whether one was a sports fan or not. The comfort of just slipping it on without ironing holds much appeal for me.
Fashion is ever-evolving but I believe that personal style and taste should matter most and our fashion sense should be a reflection of our individuality and creativity.
