This is the walk I do almost every morning. What's different is that today I got my camera with me, which I think is the second time in the three years I live in this area. The first one was on January 1st, so it is quite clear to me that this year is highly expected to be a photography year :)
And this post is inspired by the #wednesdaywalk challenge by @tattoodjay.
Some of you have already seen this route through the eyes of @fotostef and I wonder if I can offer a different perspective, add something new, or is it too much for two Hivers to be in such a small place :)
This is the beginning of our walk. It is a circular route and there is a good reason for that.
We will start heading to the next village Tourloti which is on our west side. It is the biggest village in our region called the Northern Villages of Eastern Crete.
Can you see the mountains at the back that they look like wearing a cap?
This is an amazing geological phenomenon. Actually we stand on Crete's biggest fault which can cause very big earthquakes. Luckily it is sleeping for centuries, but who knows when it will decide to wake up... Life can be very interesting, right? So this caps are just the visual evidence of what's happening underneath. Every year the mountains are getting a bit higher creating these cute caps. Fascinating, isn't it?
Let's look at something less stressful, at least when you look from far away. In reality, you pass just a few meters from this bee hive, but they are usually very calm.
And here comes the explanation why the route is circular. As you can see my loyal companion waits for me to decide which way we are going. Cause we are about to take the Old National Road that connects the capital city of Agios Nikolaos with the city of Sitia. I must say that we are already about 5-7 minutes steep uphill from the village. And the question is: why on earth is the national road so far away from the village and so hard to approach? Well, the rumors say that when the road was built the man in charge, who was from a nearby village, had a serious conflict for personal reasons with the habitats of this village, and this was his way of taking revenge. Unbelievable, but it is most likely true...
And finally, here we are on the high way! Is it what you expected?
Some signs have remained. This one reminds us that we are 48,5 km away from the capital city :)
It took some effort and very hard work to open the road, they had to "eat" the rock. And all this was done by hands, not some huge machine...
The route has a lot of old bridges. I love this perspective where you can see the aesthetics of the old way of building and above that a more modern approach. I definitely go with the old one!
I noticed today the remains of an old rusted fence. Borders... This fence is here to remind us how meaningless all that is. Now most of the fields around are abandoned and uncultivated belonging to the plants and animals as they always do.
Also the grapevines got a bit confused with the weather and they started growing new leaves. The winter is ahead and I am afraid they are going to be very surprised soon...
The view throughout the whole route is wonderful! No wonder why in summer this unknown in general old road has travelers hiking or more usually riding their mountain bikes.
This rock is one of my favorite spots on Earth. The light was not very charming, it gets very photogenic in the sunset, but we are on the morning dog walk :)
The last thing we see before we enter back to the village from the Eastern side is the small cemetery. It has a great view. It is quite common in Greece that cemeteries are at the best locations and at some amazing view points. I wonder if it is a cultural thing or is it the same in other places, too.
If we continued to the East the road connects us with another village, Mesa Mouliana. This is a theme for another Wednesday :)
And we enter to our small village, full of ruins. More abandoned houses than inhabited ones.
At the background, you can see that there is some snow. When we say that it snows here, we mean that we see some snow on these peaks :)
Maybe this will change this year...
This is the season when anemones bloom. They are more and more every day and I could not close this post without including this beauty!
Happy walks!
