lune hazed birds tweet dolefully under humid sun

waiting for the moody day to shift towards night

I watch your shadow dig in the back garden by the pond

looking for a burrowing mole or toad

or some other foreign critter in the sandy dirt

you pause to catch your breath, sniffing the loam

after nibbling a blade of tall grass you continue on

as if there was no greater pleasure than

to smell the soil of a thousand years gone past

and to taste the dirt on your tongue

it is dark now as I call you in to dinner

still entranced by the scent of the quarry

you pause to inspect your work

but soon you will sense the fall of night

the changing wind and the need for food and rest

we will take a walk to the field later on

but the toads lining the walk will only entice

a token of minor interest compared to the cat

chased from under the hedge

I assume you do this for my amusement

as well as your own personal pleasure

but I am only the shadow

and you the mythic beast of joy
