I remember I started my steemit blogging account in January 2018.
Don't remember the exact day.
But it was the beginning of something new.
Well, 4 weeks in, I got my first hater.
Actually scratch that.
I don't know if he was a hater or naturally very curious with a pessimistic tilt.
But the guy would always try to poke holes in my articles.
This made him feel like he was contributing in his strange world.
Who knows.
One day, he tells me that the subject emotional intelligence is 'fake.'
And that he needs 'studies' to prove that it exists.
Here's the funny thing.
I was about to go on a search to find this guy his 'studies.'
Until midway, I stopped.
This guy has been disagreeing with me on virtually everything thus far.
Our core principles are clearly different.
Is it really worth my time to get him a study?
All for what?
Pretty sure his ego is engaged in the argument.
So even if I send him the study, rather than being open to change positions, he'll just dig his heels further into the ground.
He doesn't want to be more informed.
He just wants to debate.
That day, I learned something.
There is a time & place for debating.
Will I find more of a need to debate down the line? Who knows...
But nowadays? Nope, not at all.
Debating is a low ROI task for me.
With the entire media landscape changing, consumers have more power than ever.
For old school media, you would watch what they played.
I had to wait until 7 pm every weekday to watch Everybody Loves Raymond.
But nowadays?
I can CHOOSE what I want to watch.
Interactive technology, decentralised blockchain & Web 3.0 has given the power to the consumer.
So this guy who was debating all the time.
He could just unfollow & mute.
He isn't forced to read my blogs anyways.
However, his old school media programming caused him to be blind to this.
There are certain times debating is okay.
And its high ROI for both parties.
But always ask yourself of the intent & the desired outcome.
If the person is a hater, then the intent is negative.
Engaging with them is low ROI.
And if the person is a great individual, but the desired outcome is nothing more than a 'I told you so' , then once again...low ROI.
You never get your time & attention back.
I assign resource credits to my time & attention.
That's how you turn the intangible to tangible.
So in my world, debating is costing me Resource Credits.
Resource Credits that aren't making me $steem.
This advice is counter intuitive to my younger self.
I used to be a hard head who would always debate.
But times have changed.
Unless you are a politician or lawyer, then I suggest you keep your eyes on your own lane.
Especially if you are a creator of some sort.
Creative energy is a form of energy.
So don't let it disseminate without strategy.
People from the woodwork always want to pop up & pull you off track.
But as the famous saying goes:
You will never reach your destination if you stop & throw stones at every dog that barks.
Ignore em & keep on pushing forward.
Till tomorrow
