ENGLISH

My previous publication generated debates in the intimate circle of friends who share work, parties, controversy and sports. Beyond the little that it contributed economically, it did fill me from a journalistic point of view, beyond knowing that I am not a media professional and that I respect very much those who are dedicated to this profession.

From that publication a debate was generated because some colleagues have different criteria and agree with the use of substances that are not accepted in sports as long as it is in favor of the show.

In my case I do not agree with the use of any drug or prohibitive medication in sport because I am one of those who think that results should be achieved in a clean way and the achievement should be the sum of your effort, commitment, dedication and sacrifice.

This led us to the purpose of this publication because my brother asked me what I thought about the best home run hitters in the Major Leagues, since the man at the top of the list and others in the top 10 were involved in controversies about the use of steroids and anabolic agents.

Baseball and the home run

Baseball is the national sport in some countries and arouses as much passion as soccer, basketball or track and field in countries where these are fan favorites. A baseball game can arouse as many passions as those staged, for example, by Japan and Mexico in the recent World Baseball Classic.

In this sport, the home run is king. It is like a goal in soccer, a basket at the end of a basketball game or a decisive shot in volleyball.

The home run has the ability to change the outcome of a sport, it always gets the fans out of their seats and whoever has the ability to hit it is one of the most followed ballplayers.
Several questions arise:

Who are the home run leaders in the Major Leagues?

Are they deserving of this award?

What is this author's criteria?

Checking Wikipedia I was able to see which are the top ten home run hitters in the history of Major League Baseball in the United States. According to the list, the greatest home run hitters of all time are:

  1. Barry Bonds: 762
    2.Hank Aaron: 755
    3.Babe Ruth: 714
    4.Albert Pujols: 703
    5.Alex Rodriguez: 696
    6.Willie Mays: 660
  2. Ken Griffey Jr.: 630
  3. Jim Thome: 612
    9.Sammy Sosa: 609
    10.Frank Robinson: 586

When reviewing this list we realize that there are three ballplayers who were involved in scandals related to the use of prohibited substances or accused of some fraudulent act related to their professional activity that even endangered their stay in baseball and/or the recognition of their records.

In all fairness, it must be said that the accusations were closed, without being found guilty, but there will always be doubts about what these athletes did.

Who were these ballplayers?

Those who were involved in any incident of this type were Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez and Sammy Sosa. Hence, many consider that the place they occupy is not deserved and that they should be removed from this list. In fact, some with the numbers they exhibit have not been exalted to the Cooperstown Hall of Fame.

There are many who believe that Hank Aaron should be number 1 or that the greatest of all time is Babe Ruth, but what many do agree on is that those who have achieved their results with the help of banned substances should be removed from this list.

A final comment

I am not the judge of the home run hitters who, like Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez or Sammy Sosa, were questioned for their sports results and the way in which they achieved them, but what I am absolutely clear about is that I am in favor of the results achieved being the result of cleanliness in sports, of daily training and of your talent.

The use of banned substances in sport goes beyond the sporting result because it affects the health of the athlete, which is ultimately the most important element and what we should be most concerned about.

Responding to the question that gives title to this publication I can say personally that not always those who appear as first in some sports disciplines are not the best and unfortunately not always science has proven at the time the use of substances that have helped an athlete to achieve results superior to those that his ability and effort have allowed him.
