The gift of the gab
One of the things that distinguishes us humans above other species within living beings is communication and within this process the word plays an essential role. Many times I have been witness, part or protagonist of the importance of the word in daily life.
In the history of mankind has played and plays an important role and we can say that thanks to the written word we have been able to enjoy literary wonders or put in a musical diagram have become anthological pieces of this cultural genre. But the word has also been a consequence of wars and discords between countries or, to put it more personally, between us human beings.
The word has the gift of building or destroying. Through the word we have fallen in love and with it we have broken hearts or friendships. Through words we have learned to be better or worse human beings. But, it alone is not destined to be positive or negative.
In my experience through life I have been able to experience in different ways the importance of words because, to be honest, many times I have been hurt, but sometimes I have not used this powerful weapon well and I have hurt people I love and admire.
Let us put into perspective the power of the word from the following areas:
The word and teaching in me
For thirty years I worked as a teacher. In this profession I was able to experience the importance of the word and its impact on students. I remember that at the beginning, due to my inexperience, I spoke to them in an authoritarian manner and I did not always find the most appropriate words.
With time I learned to behave better in front of my students and I achieved better results. The word in education taught me to communicate knowledge and transmit values.
The Effect of Words on Sons and Daughters
Words are of paramount importance in the education of children. As fate would have it, I was not able to have children, but I shared the upbringing and education of my wife's two sons. I marvel at the way she used words to teach them or to motivate them to do something.
On rare occasions I saw her mistreat her children with words and on very rare occasions she raised her voice to them. The slow, loving and sweet way of speaking to them did not prevent her from scolding them when they committed a fault. But she always used the word as an educator and not as a form of mistreatment. That must be the reason why today they are two good men, educated and loved by all. The word in the sons and daughters is the way to teach them how to behave and live together for life.
Breaking or building friendships
friends
Many friendships have had problems or have broken their bonds of friendship because of the harshness of words. It is true that friends are not lost because a friendship, if it is deep and true, is for life. But, sometimes friendships argue and words hurt, tear and wound.
The bad thing about words is that when you say them you cannot erase them and their effect will always be present. It's not that two friends can't argue over a different point of view, but the way they use words conditions their moods. Words in friendships are the way to preserve and make a friendship eternal.
The value of words in the family
If there is one place where I consider that words are key, it is in the family environment. The family is the most important thing we have in our lives and the way we articulate this relationship is very important. From my experience and how attached I am to my family, I can assure you that the way of communication between its members is vital for coexistence.
I have friends who are like family and it is nice how the mother of these three men, who are older than me, has managed to form this family from the sweetness and warmth of words. It is an example that I have kept for 40 years and they have never changed their way of communicating. Words in the family are the key to love among its members.
Love and words in a couple
the author and his wife
For a couple's relationship to last there must be, besides love, respect and understanding, good communication through the way in which lovers talk and treat each other. There are couples in which one of the parts is spoken loudly, offended, shouted at in front of people or not, and this is verbal abuse. This will damage a relationship and can end it if it is not corrected in time.
Every problem that arises must be approached with respect and communication so that it can be solved. We cannot pretend to love someone by mistreating her or making her suffer through our actions because what is loved is cared for and not harmed. The word in love is the way to make it eternal and infinite.
Words that make you happy and save your day or your life.
I love you, grateful for your kindness, thank you for your support, you did well, nice to meet you....
Many more I could say. What I want to mean is that good deeds, gratitude, doing a good deed or encouraging what is well done costs nothing and produces a lot.
Be careful with words
If I could say something as a conclusion I would say that we must be careful with our words because many times they undress us and make us see ourselves as we are. The way we express ourselves denotes our cultural level, the degree of education we have and the values formed in us. For these reasons I ask you to:
- Do not say to anyone what you do not like to be said to you,
- Do not point out to people your physical problems or see it as a way to humiliate you because what you are doing is denoting your human miseries.
- Avoid telling a person that they are underweight or overweight. That is not their problem. Simply treat him well and think that if he doesn't share his problem with you, he has his reasons,
- Speak to others as you would like to be spoken to,
- Do not say things about people that you are not sure of, nor echo words that you do not know if they are true or not.
To conclude an anecdote of words that marked me in a stage of my life.
The years 1994 and 1995 were extremely hard for my health. From November '94 to September '96 I had health problems that made me lose a lot of weight. Several people told me that I was skinny and others whispered that I had more serious problems and feared the worst. Maybe some people did it unintentionally, maybe others did not. The truth is that my mother was the one who took me out of that psychological stress and brought me back to life.
