Hamburg Speicherstadt part 1 - EN

In my next posts I will tell you something about the “Hamburg Speicherstadt” which was the biggest historic warehouse complex in the world. This complex is located between Baumwall and Oberhafen. Since 1991 is this complex under monument protection and a part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage. The complex was part of the free trade zone in the past. There are 6 town canals within this complex where somebody can do a small harbor tour by barges.
Since the beginning of the modern container shipping and the construction of the new container terminals on the south side of the river Elbe the utilization from the Speicherstadt changed because some storage space removed to the modern container terminals. In addition to storage space for carpets, spicery, tea and coffee there are also spaces for some museums and so on.
There are the following museums within the Speicherstadt:
- The Speicherstadtmuseum

This museum shows the building history and the utilization of the Speicherstadt. You can see typical fill masses and operations the people who worked in this complex.
In this museum you can see something about the history of customs from Hamburg and the Germany in general.
- The Gewürzmuseum

This is a private museum from 1991 with spicery as subject. You can see something about the cultivation and the crop, processing and transport of the spiceryies. It is one of the popular museums of Hamburg.

The Miniatur Wunderland is one of the greatest attractions of Hamburg where hundreds of thousands will come to Hamburg every year to visit it.

There are more than 20 bridges over the town canals within the Speicherstadt. These bridges combine the buildings within the Speicherstadt and the Hafen City area and the historic center of Hamburg with the Speicherstadt.
