With the latest ruling by a St Louis jury that Johnson &Johnson pay $4.7 billion in punitive damages in a lawsuit over claims that its talcum powder caused ovarian cancer (thank you tftproject@tftproject - you can read their post here https://steemit.com/news/@tftproject/j-and-j-forced-to-pay-usd4-7-billion-as-jury-finds-they-knowingly-gave-women-cancer-with-baby-powder) perhaps we can we have our faith in the justice system restored and hope that J&J will in turn do the right thing and compensate the victims as ordered. Finally, finally the little people have won!

After such fantastic ruling, I hate to rain on a good parade. Am I being Negative Nelly?

Johnson & Johnson is a household name. After all, we are dealing with a respectable company, bastion of communities, beacon of health and well-being. Their website tells us so: https://www.jnj.com/about-jnj:

“At Johnson & Johnson, we believe good health is the foundation of vibrant lives, thriving communities and forward progress. That’s why for more than 130 years, we have aimed to keep people well at every age and every stage of life. Today, as the world’s largest and most broadly based healthcare company, we are committed to using our reach and size for good. We strive to improve access and affordability, create healthier communities, and put a healthy mind, body and environment within reach of everyone, everywhere.”

Yeah, right. And I have swamp land in Florida to sell you.

But, you’ll say, “It’s Johnson & Johnson! I grew up with them! I love their products!” In this matter, we cannot underestimate the Power of the Name, the nostalgia of childhood memories, the sweet picture of mom powdering our cute baby buttocks, the aura of a “trusted brand”. Johnson & Johnson themselves call it: “Our Heritage: 130 Years of Caring”. But we forget that familiarity breeds lack of questioning, and questioning we must.

Because of the company's image, our lack of knowledge and our short memory, and because of the complicity of a corrupted establishment, J&J always seems to come out on top despite the long list of recalls, https://www.drugwatch.com/manufacturers/johnson-and-johnson/, and lawsuits http://johnsonandtoxin.com/lawsuits.shtmlJ Verdicts are overturned, plea deals negotiated, a few cursory slaps of the hand distributed, everything is swept under the rug and collective amnesia sets in. Back to their "heritage" for the 131th year.

This does not only play out in the business/consumer arena. I wonder what heritage the step-daughter of J&J heir and billionaire Samuel Curtis "Curt" Johnson III will carry into her future. He molested her starting age 12, and for that he was sentenced “to four months in jail with Huber privileges after 60 days and fined $6,000. He will not have to register as a sex offender.”. You can read all the sordid facts of the trial here: http://archive.jsonline.com/news/crime/johnson07-b99285933z1-262145461.html

But wait, there’s more!

As would be expected, the sphere of influence of such a powerful company extends over to our “elected representatives”. Here is a list of the political recipients of their dirty money in 2017 http://www.investor.jnj.com/_document/political-contributions-midyear-update-2017?id=0000015d-9ddb-d986-ad7d-9fff47250000(and don’t forget to go to the end of the document for the PACs).

There may be a call for contacting our so-called representatives, but I doubt very much that it would yield any consequential results.

Perhaps the only and most powerful thing that we at the grassroots level can do is to wield the power of the boycott. No simple matter, though. In order for it to be effective, you need to know that Johnson & Johnson is not only about talcum powder and baby shampoo. The Johnson & Johnson empire manufactures consumer health care products, medical devices and pharmaceutical drugs.

The list below is by no means an exhaustive list, but it can get us started. Going through the J&J portal gets you into quite a rabbit hole. You’ll probably find out that you are buying or using a lot of their products without knowing they are J&J. My hope is that as our J&J supplies dwindle, we will patronize the smaller manufacturers, our local producers, artisans and alchemists and, who knows, do without much of that stuff that we probably never needed in the first place.
