Animals on the Jack's Fork

I went floating on the Jack's Fork river last week. It is located in Missouri and these are a few of the animals I saw.
This is a mink. I think of them as water ferrets.

I followed it as it swam/ran down the river.

I didn't notice the white fur on it until I saw this last picture.

Ok, so it was sunbathing...then I came along... It is some type of water snake, and is not venomous.

I caught a baby turtle! It didn't know how to escape yet...hopefully it learned it's lesson.

Look how tiny it is!

p.s. What is the proper pronoun to use for an animal when you don't know it's gender?
