Ci sono periodi nella vita del musicista che cambiano radicalmente il modo di fare musica.I suoi scritti non furono più caratterizzati da sano equilibrio e neanche condivisibile ma orientati a schemi diversi. Capisce di essere a un bivio, e si rivolge a sua madre inviandole una missiva in cui provava a spiegarle i propri tormenti e le fa presente le scelte che avrebbe posto in essere. È convinto che solo la musica può dare senso alla sua vita. La madre era fortemente preoccupata perché conosceva le difficoltà economiche che avrebbero messo in forse la quotidianità di vita. Schumann fa presente in questa missiva di come lui ambisse alla carriera del concertista, che al suo dire viene fuori da un costante e tenace lavoro, senza essere a conoscenza del proprio genio artistico.

There are periods in the life of the musician who radically change the way of making music. His writings were no longer characterized by healthy balance and not even shareable but oriented to different patterns. He understands that he is at a crossroads, and turns to his mother by sending her a missive in which he tried to explain his torments to her and made her aware of the choices he would make. He is convinced that only music can give meaning to his life. The mother was deeply worried because she knew the economic difficulties that would have put life's daily life in doubt. Schumann points out in this letter of how he aspired to the career of the concert performer, who emerges from constant and tenacious work without being aware of his artistic genius.

Durante gli anni dei propri studi prosegue da autodidatta la composizione e la passione per la musica brillante lascia il posto a interessi per gli esponenti migliori. Ma avviene un evento di cui si parla e si sa poco. Le mani di Robert hanno dita deboli provocando scelte diverse, cercando di optare per la composizione. Segno del destino? è questa una scelta che accresce pienamente le sue potenzialità creative ed espressive, e cosi' abbiamo un ottocento musicale che fa suo uno dei migliori autori romantici. Queste dita davano seri problemi, il danno non gli consentiva neanche di sparare durante il servizio militare. C'è chi dice che questi alla mano destra erano disturbi causati dall'uso del mercurio che Robert faceva per curare la sifilide da cui era affetto. Ma il genio era interessato anche da disturbi nervosi che avrebbero indotto Schumann alla pazzia. Si discusse se fosse stata proprio la sifilide a portare alla follia come era avvenuto anche nelle vite di Donizzetti e Nietzsche. Ma intanto l'arte inizia a diventare parte della politica e i compositori devono dare prove di opportuna saggezza anche nelle decisioni private.
