With only a week left, Detective Summerset (Morgan Freeman) wants to retire and make room for his successor, the young Detective Mills (Brad Pitt). He has just moved into the city together with his wife Trace (Gwyneth Paltrow) and is charged on his first day with the investigation of a whimsical, cruel murder series. The first victim is a 400-pound man and is found buried in his home with his face buried in the food. It turns out that he was forced to eat until he died of internal bleeding. The murders seem to follow a very specific pattern. Each victim represents one of the seven deadly sins: greed, arrogance, envy, anger, lust, lethargy, and excess.
