What are your thoughts on Musing.io's decision to stop displaying its data from other frontends and only show them at Musing.io?
I think that we will see more of this kind of separation as we move into the SMT-era.
The Steem blockchain can be considered as offering a number of components:
Decentralised censorship-resistant free storage
The Steem blockchain allows dApps to store user contributions free of charge (although this is funded through the rewards paid to witnesses, many of whom run the Steem nodes). The decentralised nature of the blockchain aims to be resistant to any government or company censorship.
Inflation-and-upvote-based Steem token economy
Steem Power investments give a stake in the distribution of the reward pool. These allow dApps to incentivise and reward their users.
Seven day reward structure with defined author / curation split
Steem rewards are paid seven days after posts are created with a defined author and curator reward structure.
Resource credits system
Resource credits give users an allocation for usage of the Steem blockchain.
Whilst all of these components contribute to the basic "Steemit" offering, not all dApps will necessarily want to use all components. dApps are likely to start picking and choosing which elements best fit their business models.
For example:
- dApps may want faster access to their data and larger storage volumes than can be provided by the blockchain (this is the case for all video and photo dApps - since the blockchain is text only).
- dApps may want to move away from seven day payout, with a separate reward structure using their own SMTs.
- dApps may opt for a simpler author / curator reward split, perhaps removing curation rewards altogether and rewarding their SMT holders through some other method.
- dApps may want greater access for new users so could use their own storage and dispense with Resource Credits.
As we move to the SMT-era I think we will see much more innovation along these lines. Musing is just a little ahead of its time!
