According to the USNews.com rankings, the top six jobs in the US in 2018 were:
- Software developer
- Dentist
- Physician Assistant
- Nurse Practicioner
- Orthodontist
- Statistician
The ranking uses various metrics combined into a single ranking including: median salary, employment rate (i.e. percentage employed / unemployed with this occupation), likely growth in this occupation, future job prospects, stress level and work-life balance.
Note that the above results are likely to be highly influenced by the US health system under which medical practitioners are very well paid. Such rankings will vary considerably by country.
In reality, the best profession or job is the one that you enjoy the most (as long as you can make some kind of living from it). Your chosen career lasts for most of your life and most people work 5 or 6 days a week. Follow your passions if you can, and make your passions work for you!
