Utopian.io is a Steem community which rewards contributions to open source projects.
The community launched back in September 2017. There was previously a Utopian.io front end website. This is currently being rebuilt (as at July 2018) and should be available again shortly. Contributions can still be made through other Steem platforms (steemit, busy etc) using the appropriate tags.
There are many different categories of contributions to open source projects that are eligible for rewards:
- Development (i.e. coding of open source projects)
- Bug hunting (finding errors)
- Suggestions
- Graphics
- Analysis
- Documentation
- Visibility (i.e. marketing)
- Tutorials and video tutorials
- Blog posts for open source projects
- Copywriting
- Translations
As such people with all kinds of skills can contribute to open source projects.
Utopian requires certain policies to be met in order to be eligible for rewards and an upvote from utopian.io. Moderators review each post to check that these policies are met.
There are templates to follow and also guidelines to assist in obtaining higher rewards. Note that not all posts will receive rewards, only those with the higher scores (although currently almost all posts that meet the policies get some level of reward).
Contributors should also have a github account which can be linked to their Steem account to work with Utopian.
Utopian also offers the possibility for new users to sign up to Steem without the current steemit delays, as long as they have an active github account with good evidence of activity in the open source world.
Utopian also follows the curation trails of some technology and science communities, such as Steemstem, providing upvotes to these Steem communities.

In my view it's a very friendly community and one of the best things on the Steem blockchain. Contributions typically require much more work than typical Steem blog posts although rewards can also be high.
