Another thing about Section 8 is that it keeps the price of substandard housing artificially high. By allowing slum lords to get top dollar for garbage. If a person had to pay all of that money out of their pocket. They would demand better conditions but since they are only paying a hundred or two. They accept the poor conditions. Because the crappy house is worth what they are paying. But the Slum Lord gets full price from Section 8. This cycle keeps the working poor who do not get Section 8 locked into the same slums. Through high rent.
If there were no Section 8. the Slum Lords would have to charge what their dumps are really worth. Which would give the working poor a chance to get ahead.
My friend had a great 1 bdrm townhouse. In a location that was perfect for him. But he got greedy. He had been on the Section 8 waiting list for some time . When he heard that a big apartment complex would be closing in a year or so and he knew that all those people would get Emergency Section 8. Which moves you to the top of the years long waiting list. So he gave up his good place. Moved into the closing estates. Sure enough after a few months they closed and he got his Emergency Section 8. He got a nice place for cheap. But the location was terrible for him for many reasons. Over next couple of years he moved several time and finally ended up in a homeless shelter. He should have stayed where he was. He had been stable there for years but the temptation of something for nothing and thinking he was so smart to pull a fast one on the system. Ended up costing him dearly. He now has to live with family instead of the freedom of his own place. The Welfare System destroys lives for Generations at a time.
