Elephant seals have always impressed me with their size and of course their aggression when they are ashore during their breeding season. So, it was by far a dream come true when I had the opportunity to walk and explore amongst these somewhat ugly yet adorable giants of the seal world.
These guys only come to shore for 2 reasons - to breed and then later on in late summer to molt. The rest of the time they are in their foraging grounds, which can be 1,000's of km away! Besides living the majority of their life in the ocean they are also deep, deep diving mammals with over 80% of all of their dives being below 800m|2400ft. That alone is impressive but to see them on shore and safely being able to walk amongst them easily made my day when I was ashore in South Georgia
