It ain't all sunshine and rainbows during summer in Antarctica and believe me the weather changes quickly at times, which can add to a bit of adventure for the expedition staff, as well as, the on board guests. Blizzards with high winds and ice moving around at a face pace is something that can cut a landing excursion short and it can happen quickly too.
The other morning we knew the weather was going to get worse in the morning and as a result of this knowledge our Expedition Leader decided to begin the day about 2 hours earlier to compensate for the potential incoming weather. Well, the forecast was accurate, as about an hour before I took this photo it was actually really nice out and then within 30 mins the wind picked up and we were in a winter blizzard with a sea of ice moving quickly towards the ship.
This meant we had to move about 100 guests that were on shore on an island called Petermann in quite a hastly and efficient manner. It was a successful endeavour in the end and all I had to do was spend more time on the water and follow the ship with a few co-workers on the board for about 30mins until the ship was in a patch of water with no ice around it. To say I was cold is an understated and I did spend quite a few minutes in a hot shower once I finally got back on board the ship
