When you think of Antarctica you don't usually think of colours. The majority of colour you see is blue, black and white and that is about it. However, a strange thing happens as the summer season progresses and some of the snow starts to melt exposing smooth rock. Snow algae is also exposed to the sunshine and explodes, which you can see in this photo.
I have never seen the snow algae so pronounced in one area like I did this day on Petermann Island on the Antarctic peninsula. It does make for a great backdrop though for the Gentoo penguin waddling his way around, just going about his day.
