Orca are known as the apex predators of the ocean and this is especially true in the waters that surround Antarctica. They prey ranges from fish to whales and even adorable penguins are on the menu from time to time. This encounter that I was so lucky to have ocurred in November when I was exploring the Gerlache Strait on a small zodiac.
It was a pod of small Type B orca, whom are known to harass penguins from time to time but not they are not considered to be a major food source for this type of orca. It was quite exciting to watch this encounter as the Gentoo penguin was swimming at high speed and being pursed by 3 juvenile orca.
The chase lasted for a good few minutes with the penguin darting around and changing direction quickly when the orca started to get gain on him. Just when it seemed like it was game over for the Gentoo penguin he launched himself into one of zodiacs close by and escaped from the juvenile orca.
