making some noise

The most common sound you get when you are encountering whales in nature is the relaxing noise of them exhaling and inhaling. This sound alone is beyond relaxing and exciting all in one and it is loud. Another impressive and somewhat startling sound these animals can create is when they breach and smack on the surface of the water as they crash back into the ocean.

It can easily be compared to the crack of thunder during a summer storm and easily leaves people wide eyed in awe. The reason for these large breaches I believe is to communicate with one another from afar, as this sound under the water can travel for miles. It can let other humpbacks close by to let them know where they are in either a friendly manner/invitation or an aggressive/territorial display.

The breach from the humpback below is known as chin slapping, which is believed to be bit of an aggressive/territorial breach. Warning other humpbacks that this is indeed their area and to keep your distance. Impressive known the less...
