I have not had the privilege of interacting with Macaroni penguins in the past, as they don't nest on the Antarctic Peninsula but I am fortunate to see one or two that hang out on the South Shetland Islands from time to time - we call him, Kevin. However, I did have the opportunity to zodiac cruise around South Georgia where we were able to see a nesting colony of Macaroni's from our small vessel. They are quite adorable and very photogenic with their yellow hair styles and somewhat grumpy appearance, which makes them great to photograph.

One unfortunate thing, as I was zodiac cruising around was that we had quite a bit of swell and surge whilst there, which meant I had to 1) keep my distance a little bit so we wouldn't wash up on shore, and 2) I didn't really have many opportunities to take my camera out, as I was primarily focused on keeping the boat off the nearby rocks - kind of my actual job to safely zodiac cruise with people and bring them to the ship in the relatively same condition that I picked them up in.

These were the only shots I could manage in those challenging conditions, which doesn't quite capture the experience but I am hoping that in the future I will have another opportunity to get back around South Georgia and interact with these penguin species again.
