My happy place is definitely driving a small, high speed zodiac around the ice on the Antarctic peninsula in search of large marine mammals and simply exploring the region. Early one morning, myself and a few of my co-workers were up on the bridge and happily surprised that we had a glorious sunny morning with little to no wind, which means lots of options for zodiac cruising with large marine mammals.

Once we got on the water, it didn't take long for humpback whales to be spotted not too far from the ship's location. As a result most of the cruising zodiacs got the opportunity to interact with these gentle giants from a zodiac perspective. My cruise we had 3 animals - 2 large adults and a small calf, which was probably born only 6-8 months prior to this encounter. The curious little one wanted to play and interact with our zodiacs but you could see mum was keeping him on a short leash but he did swim purposely over towards our zodiac, stopped underneath our zodiac, took a big look up at us before speeding back up and swimming towards his mum.

A beautiful and short encounter but one that will stick in my mind of a long time and for the guests on board my zodiac, its something you don't forget easily.
