It is not wonder that a lot people compare seals to dogs, especially, when you get a glimpse of their faces. This is an intimidating Leopard Seal, which doesn't look too intimidating from this photo. However, it did just finish having its lunch - and what was on the menu, you ask? Well, it was an adult Gentoo Penguin, which from the looks of this big guy's face, it was somewhat delicious.
Even though it is well documented that leopard seals will indeed snack on various penguin species during the summer months in Antarctica, it is also well known that the majority of this apex predator's diet actually consists of Krill - not penguins. Honestly, though my heart does skip a beat when I have the opportunity to interact with these mammals from a small zodiac. Mainly because they are so big, sinister looking and have ZERO concerns of coming right up for a close encounter but due to that lack of that flight response that curiosity can turn into aggression quite quickly and with out warning. I have heard of many stories of these animals biting the zodiac tubes throughout the years. Fingers crossed this won't happen to me in the following months.
