My secondary school days were tough. Adolescence and youthful exuberance came knocking and uninformed me embraced it and all it鈥檚 unpleasant consequences. I surrendered to almost all forms of peer pressure in my days in the boarding school.
It was the last trimester of our final year. School had just resumed and I couldn鈥檛 wait to see my girlfriend again. I saw her only once during our last vocation and I informed her about the new smartphone I was going to bring to school when we resume. As expected, she was hyped about the news and we all couldn鈥檛 wait to take our Facebook pictures with my new smartphone in school.
I reported to school the very day school resumed. It was very unusual of me. I reported to school early only for one reason, to show off my new smartphone. It was an android HTC Phone that my auntie gifted me. Phones were not allowed in our school, especially smartphones. But I was a senior in final year and a classroom prefect so I wasn鈥檛 bothered even a bit. All I just wanted was to see my girlfriend in school.
On the weekend I was expecting to see my girlfriend in school, my phone was stolen from my bag before I had woken up. My friends and I searched every bag and chop box in our house but found nothing. My phone was gone and I couldn鈥檛 do anything about it.
My girlfriend finally reported to school. She didn鈥檛 believe that the phone was stolen. She thought I had lied to her about the phone and I didn鈥檛 even bring any phone from the house. Even though she didn鈥檛 say that to me, I only draw that impression based on how she reacted to the news that my new phone had been stolen before she could even see it.
I loved this girl so much and I didn鈥檛 want anything to threaten our relationship. To impress this girl again, stupid me bought a new smartphone with part of my school fees that I was still keeping with me. When she asked where I got it from, I told her and everyone that my auntie bought me a new one to replace the one they had stolen. It was not difficult to believe because nobody actually cared. But this was not even the biggest lie, not the lie I鈥檓 writing this post about.
Anyway my new phone was dope, our selfies were classic and I was the sweetest boyfriend on campus again. I was the Dubai of my class, the center of attention. Everything was dope until it was time for West Africa Certificate Examination registration and I had to clear my school fees debt. I went home immediately, to my mother. My parents were separated then, I lied to my mother that part of my school fees my father gave me was stolen in my bag the day I reported to school and I couldn鈥檛 tell my father because I was scared he鈥檇 beat me. This was the first time i was spitting lies on my moms face. This was shameful to do but i had no other option. Long story short, my mother bought the lie finally and gave me the money to complete my school fees.
I was able to clear my fees finally. What I鈥檝e rather found very difficult to clear up till date is the guilt that I feel whenever I remember this story. I hope that someday I鈥檒l gather enough courage to tell my mother the truth.
